5 Most Common Mistakes when it comes to Cloth Diapering

How to use washable Diapers

A new Cloth Diapering mom is bound to get lost in the dos and don’ts that cloth diapering needs. They are not really as complicated as people tend to make it. We as new mothers tend to go with the flow and give up soon considering that it is too tough to handle. But before you start with cloth diapering make sure you have chosen the right cloth diaper for your baby.

It always better to consult the support team of the cloth diaper brands before choosing a cloth diaper. Buying a diaper blindfolded just because every second person has been telling or appreciating its type doesn’t make it full proof. Every baby is different. So are their needs. A baby who poops once in two days can happily use an all in one diaper or a pocket diaper. But for a baby who poops 3+ times a day will need cover diapers for its own economical benefits.

Cloth Diapering Mistake #1:

Not understanding the basic concept:

Cloth Diapering has some really basic concepts that one needs to understand before getting into its depths. They are much different than cloth nappies. Cloth nappies need to be changed after every pee. Cloth diapers on the other hand are eligible enough to soak pee for 2-12 hours depending on the type of cloth diaper it is. Modern Cloth diapers and cloth nappies are thus not the same. They are completely washable and reusable.

Cloth diapers have soakers (also known as inserts) that need to be inserted or placed on the diaper. They are the ones that do the major job of absorbing pee. The other important part of the modern cloth diaper is the outer shell. This is made of a high quality PUL which allows air to pass but not pee thus making them waterproof, breathable and leak proof diapers. Reading the instructions leaflet before using them helps a ton.

Cloth Diapering Mistake#2:

Expecting cloth diapers to look like disposables:

Disposables are very thin and narrow because the chemical crystals inside swell up when wet. Cloth diapers do not change shape when wet, so are designed to put absorbency where it is needed. This will not cause any discomfort to baby. In fact, for babies who have hips that are “out” from their delivery, doctors recommend double-diapering so that the thickness between the legs will put them in the froggy position in order for the hips to go back into place. You will cause problems for your baby by putting her into tight-fitting diapers, sleepers, or baby carriers that position the legs straight down. Even doctors recommend that babies should have froggy legs (legs spread wide apart) instead of straight legs.

P.S: Cloth diapers look more attractive and cute on babies bum.

Cloth Diapering Mistake #3:

Not prepping the cloth diapers properly and improper wash cycle:

This is the one of the most important part. Some cloth diaper soakers/inserts need some basic prepping. Natural fabrics like organic bamboo cotton needs to be prepped before using them full fledged. Prepping is nothing but the process of washing diapers a few numbers of times in order to prepare the cloth diapers to be fully absorbent. They become fully absorbent after 8-10 washes. But that does not mean you can use it only after washing them so many times. They can be used after the first wash for short naps. Washing cloth diapers also does not mean just rinsing them, it means having a complete wash cycle.

Use appropriate detergent and water to wash your cloth diapers. Use detergents that are free of additives, fragrances and softeners, for e.g. Surf Excel, Tide Plus and Rustic Art little laundry. DO not use soap, liquid detergents, dettol etc on cloth diapers. Take a look at common mistakes in washing cloth diapers here >>

Cloth Diapering Mistake #4:

Using talcum powder or rash creams:

This again is one of the most common mistakes that most parents make when it comes to Cloth Diapering. First of all, cloth diapers do not cause rashes unless the diaper is not been changed timely or not cleaned when pooped. There absolutely is no need to use a rash cream or powder. They affect the absorbency of the cloth diapers and also cause skin irritation. You may use coconut oil generously between every change. Coconut oil is the best thing on their bottoms as they keep their skin moisturised.

Cloth Diapering Mistake# 5:

Not getting the right fit:

A cloth diaper, too loose or too tight will give leak issues. Getting the right fit is very important. There should be no gaps on the crotch area. The elastics should be on the crease of the legs like that of underwear. The rise setting should be done according to the weight of the baby. Do note that slight elastic marks are absolutely normal. They go away in 15-20 minutes.

Cloth diapering is easy–just keep baby in a dry diaper, keep a very simple wash routine every day. Read our Beginner’s Guide To Cloth Diapering.

Review – Why I chose Superbottoms Cloth Diapers for my baby

When I became a mother, the one thing that bothered me the most was spending sleepless nights changing the Cloth Nappies. I would set an alarm of every hour to get up and check if my new born has peed or pooped. He has been a super heavy wetter right from Day 7. I would forever look tired changing him because my family won’t allow me to use Disposables for obvious reasons.

A lot of us are aware that disposable diapers have chemicals in them that causes rashes on the delicate skin of babies. These chemicals that convert pee into gel are not magic gel crystals but toxic agents. There is really no magic in them that is claimed by the TV commercials. Also a very few of us know that every disposable diaper that we throw in the bin stays on the landfills for years together. Well at least for 250-500 years. Shocking and disappointing; isn’t it? Disposable Diapers and Sanitary napkins contribute majorly to the landfills. I of course as a new first time mother had no idea about this. Frankly speaking, I was too ignorant or rather too busy to understand motherhood. In fact, the concept of Cloth Diapering was not even known to me.

It is extremely unfortunate that there is no awareness on Cloth Diapers among new parents. So when I was introduced to Cloth Diapers, I found it hard to digest that something made of cloth is so absorbent in nature and at the same time keeps my baby’s bottoms dry.

I had conveniently started using disposable diapers against all odds when my baby was one month old, knowing not what I am doing to my baby and to the environment. At the same time, I kept using disposable sanitary napkins when I was menstruating. One fine day I got horrible rashes using the sanitary napkins. This turned out to be an eye opener. I read more and found out that the contents of sanitary napkins and disposable cloth diapers are the same. If I can get rashes using them for just a week, how would my baby feel being under plastic day in and day out. I immediately picked up my smartphone and started researching for alternatives. I bumped into various cloth diaper brands across amazon and first cry. Some were so inexpensive that I could not understand the quality of brands. The reviews of users did not convince me in buying them. On the other hand, some brands were so expensive that I did not find them pocket friendly. Some cloth diaper brands like Thirsties, Grovia did grab my attention but the price discouraged me from buying them.

I then came across this beautiful brand called Superbottoms. Its mesmerising prints immediately grabbed my attention. I ordered a couple of them and had a chat on whatsapp with the mompreneur and she made me understand the entire concept and also introduced me to the basic concept of cloth diapering. She handled the worries of a new mother patiently. Since then, there has been no looking back. It has been 9 months of using cloth diapers from superbottoms and its performance still amazes me. Each morning, we wake up with happy, leak free, dry and rash free bottoms.

So how does this really work? What are cloth diapers and what makes cloth diapers better alternative that disposable diapers?

A lot of my fellow moms ask me these questions.

Cloth Diapers or Moderns Cloth Diapers are the new age diapering systems that provide all the benefits of disposable diapers.
A cloth diaper consist of 3 parts:

  1. An outer water-resistant shell
  2. A soaker (pad) that absorbs pee
  3. A dry feel layer on top

Key features of cloth diapers:

  • Water resistant: the outer shell of the diaper is water resistant. It won’t leak unless the soaker has no more place to absorb any more pee. Even if it leaks, the baby will not feel wetness due to the suede layer on top
  • Suede layer: this layer provides a dry feel to baby’s bottoms even when it is peed on.
  • Washable and Reusable: these diapers are 100% washable and reusable. Each diaper and soaker is durable enough to last 300+ washes. I have a lot from my very first order and it works absolutely amazing.
  • Economical: the money spent on Cloth Diapers is a one-time investment. I remember spending 4000 a month on baby diapers. This has been eliminated since the time I invested in Cloth Diapers.
  • Non-Toxic: this is my most favourite feature. Cloth Diapers are made of cloth and does not have any chemicals unlike disposable diapers.
  • Longer Absorbency: Superbottoms Plus has been my all night saviour. It lasts for 10+ hours on my heavy wetting baby.
  • Hold poop explosion: In my entire one year of motherhood, I have faced various poop blow outs when using disposable diapers. Cloth Diapers hold poop generously and it has saved my efforts of cleaning everything after a poopy baby.
  • Easy Washing: Washing them is as easy as washing other clothes. If pooped, I rinse the poop with a jet spray and store the soiled diapers in a wetbag until it’s time for laundry. I then wash it in the washing machine along with other clothes.
  • Indian Brand: When I decided to start Cloth Diapering, I was keen on supporting Indian Brands. Superbottoms being an Indian Brand fulfilled this expectation of mine too. So if you are looking to buy Cloth Diapers in India, don’t miss to check their site. A lot of my friends residing in US have also ordered from them. They are happy that Superbottoms deliver across the globe and maintains the International quality standards at such affordable price.
  • Environment Friendly: this is my next most favourite feature. I love being environment friendly. I love that I am doing my bit to save Mother Earth

I am busy loving my baby and saving Mother Earth; Are you?

Cloth Diapering Out of Home

Many parents believe that reusable diapers are to be used primarily at home. They use them at home during day-time while for nights and for going out; they prefer to use disposables because they are, as the name suggests, easy disposing off. However, cloth diapering out of home is much simpler than you think.

Here are 4 ways to make cloth diapering out of home a success for you.

1. Decide how long do you plan to be out and figure a few things out

Depending on the time duration for which you plan to be out, you will have decide on the type of diaper you choose.

If you are going to be out for long, at a place where there may not be proper changing facilities, you may want to use high-absorbency diapers such as Superbottoms Plus All-in-ones.

If you are sure there are changing rooms available, you can use regular diapers too.

Using covers with cloth diaper soakers/inserts are good for out of home diapering if you have changing facilities.

You can carry extra cloth diaper inserts and a few covers and simply change soakers and reuse the outer. That way, you have to carry lesser number of diapers

2. Carry a wet bag

Wet bags are waterproof bags that are especially convenient to carry wet / soiled diapers post changing.

Carrying wet bags makes like very simple when you are cloth diapering out of home.

3. What do I do with the poop?

This is one of the biggest concerns parents have when they cloth diaper out of home. So when your baby poops, like with disposable diapers, you need to wipe your baby’s bottom clean first.

If you have the facility to, knock off the poop in the pot and flush it down. You can keep the diaper in the wet bag / waterproof bag to carry home. Ensure that the bag is tightly sealed and closed to avoid stink.

If you do not have the option of knocking off the poop, it is okay to tightly close the diaper and store it in a waterproof bag, sealed shut.

Once you are home, you can wash the diapers clean as usual.

4. Cloth Diapering on Vacation

While this calls for an entirely separate post (that we will put up eventually), cloth diapering on vacation requires a bit of planning but it is certainly doable!

As we always say, figure out the washing and storing facilities. If you are on a homestay vacation, choose one with a washing machine. If not, hotel bath tubs / wash basins work just fine.

Ensure you carry enough cloth diapers and your favourite detergent and you are good to go!

Cloth diapering 100% is doable and great for your baby and the environment.

When you can get the convenience of disposable diapers in the goodness of cloth, why let plastic touch your baby’s bottom?

5 key factors to consider while choosing a cloth diaper for your baby

When you have a baby, you have to make many choices about every small thing. In this blog, we will try making one choice easier for you. Choosing the right reusable diaper (Advanced cloth diaper) for your baby.

Some factors you want to figure out before you choose the cloth diaper

  1. How much of cloth diapering do you intend to do

Some parents prefer to use diapers only during the night-time or nap-time while others prefer to keep them all through the day. Depending on your intention, you will need to figure how many diapers you will need. That will also define the type you want to go for.

  1. Age of your baby

Advanced Cloth Diapers come in 2 main sizes –

One-size: These diapers fit babies from 3-17 kg. They have snaps to adjust size as per your baby’s requirement

For newborn babies, 1-2 month, the one-size diapers may seem a little big. For them, we suggest choosing the newborn size.

Newborn size: These are small size diapers that last the baby till up to 7kg. They are great if you want to cloth diaper your newborn. Newborn diapers also come with size adjustment snaps. You can read more about the newborn diapers here

3. Budget

One of the key benefits of cloth diapering is that it saves you a lot of money. If one chooses to use disposable diapers, you end up spending anywhere around 70-80 thousand rupees. Cloth diapering, on the other hand, can be managed in 10-12 thousand rupees or lesser!

If you want to go even more economical on cloth diapers too, you can choose cover diapers instead of pocket diapers and you can indeed manage your diapering in as less as 5-6 thousand rupees.

  1. Heavy / medium wetter

Your cloth diapering choice also depends on how heavy wetting your baby is. If your baby is a very heavy wetter, you may want to choose soakers / inserts that are ideal for heavy-wetting babies. Hemp soakers are known to be the most absorbent soakers and you can choose those for your little one if he is a heavy wetter.

You can also choose diapers such as Superbottoms Plus which are ideal for heavy wetters and are known to last good 7-8 hours as well.

  1. Care-giver

Using cloth diapers is easy. However, if you are planning to leave your child in the care of grandparents, nannies, or day-care, you may want to choose diapers that are simplest to use.

With that objective, going for a pocket diaper or Superbottoms Plus All-in-one cloth diapers is ideal. In the pocket diaper, you can stuff the pocket with soakers / inserts once a day post washing and you are good to go.

Making cloth diapers work for you needs the right advice on the choice of diapers. Cloth diapers can be a very cost-effective, however, a wrong choice can discourage you or can turn out to be expensive in the longer run. Diapering is an important aspect of childcare and development. With at least 2 years of your child being spent in diapers, you will want the choice to be right.

Difference Between Pocket Diaper and Cover Diaper

What exactly is the difference between a Pocket Diaper and a Cover Diaper? And what is best for my baby?
This is one of the most common questions we come across. Here is a simple, pictorial explanation that you may find useful.
Pocket Diapers
  • Pocket Diapers have a pocket of the dry-feel fabric in which one places the soaker (absorbent pad)
  • Cover Diapers do not have this pocket, instead the dry-feel layer is attached ON the soaker. This soaker is placed inside the cover (Like sanitary napkins are).
So Pocket Diapers have a Pocket, hence they are called ‘Pocket Diapers’ and Cover diapers only cover the soaker hence they are called ‘Cover Diapers’ 🙂
So what is best for your baby?
To know what is best for your baby, you must understand the pros and cons of each.

  • Cover Diapers, since you can replace the wet soaker and reuse the cover, are a little more economical
  • Pocket Diapers, due to overall dry-feel fabric, provide better performance and protection

Pocket diapers need to be washed completely once the soaker is soaked. This because, although the dry-feel layer is dry, urine has passed through it and for hygiene reasons it is best to replace the entire diaper. If you are new to Cloth Diapering, we always recommend starting out with Pocket Diapers. They are simple, great in performance, and will give you a good idea about cloth diapering.

Superbottoms cover diaper
This is how they look on the inside.
When is it best to go for Cover Diapers?
Go for cover diapers if you are looking for a more economical option or if you want something to go over your nappy pads, homemade nappies, or even padded langots. Cover diapers are thus more versatile than pocket diapers. Many mothers also keep a mixed set of Cover Diapers and Pocket Diapers – Covers for day-time or use at home, and Pockets during nights or on-the-go. However, if you are trying Cloth Diapers for the first time, it is best to start with the most common and popular type, the Pocket Diaper.
