Using Cloth Diapers in Day Care

Being a cloth diapering mother myself, I have always been particular to use cloth diapers during my vacations and even at Day Care. This is simply because I like to know what touches my precious little one. When you use disposables, you do not know what chemicals are there in them which always makes me a pro-cloth diaper user!

You must have seen our blogs on cloth diapering in a vacation (Link). This blog covers how to cloth diaper a baby when he/she is at daycare. Here are some tips to take you through –

1)      Choose the right daycare: When you are searching for daycare, you can select one that cloth diapers. Many day cares these days consider cloth for the love of the environment.

2)    Convince them for Cloth diapers, in case you don’t find any that allows cloth diapers – When BabyG started his daycare, I told the folks there, that he is allergic to disposable diapers. So either cloth diapers or regular under wears are the only options because the doctor has told us to not use disposables. Regular under wears are so inconvenient to them. The agreed to use cloth!

3)      Show them your stash: Explain to them how cloth diapers work and show how easy it is. It’s not rocket science really! Tell them the benefits of cloth over disposables.

4)      Consider one single type of diaper for them: Try giving just one type of diaper to them so that they do not get confused. Most daycares prefer pocket diaper or all in one diaper because they find it very convenient and easy to use.

5)      Explain to them how to use cloth diapers: Give them a poster of a neat fit or a nice printout of the instructions. Demonstrate to them how to put it on the baby. Let them put it a few times on the baby in front of you. Ask for a trial run for a few days and make sure that they are clear with the instructions.

6) Fleece comes to the rescue: Most day cares fret with cloth diapers only because they are worried about cleaning the poop. Give a disposable or a fleece liner and explain them its use and they would surely agree.

7) Wet bags are ideal: Give them 2 wet bags to store soiled diapers. If they are still not happy of the poop, you can ask them to put the pooped liners in a separate wet bag and clean them once come back home.

These are just a few tips that can help you convince the daycare in using Cloth diapers. Do comment as to what worked for you!

All you need to know about Bleaching Cloth Diapers!

BLEACHING CLOTH DIAPERS

Bleaching cloth diapers are generally considered to be a big no-no.  However Bleaching cloth diapers at the right time, for a right cause and in a right way will do no harm to your cloth diapers. This blog covers everything you need to know about Bleaching.

What is Bleaching?

Bleaching is a process of disinfecting cloth diapers when all the other methods fail (Hot water rinses, Sun-drying etc)

When do I Bleach my Cloth Diapers?

You can bleach your cloth diapers once a year or so if it gives the following issues –

  1. Ammonia Build Up – If you have been facing strong ammonia smell on your soakers, you can first try hot water rinses. If that doesn’t work, you may bleach them.
  2. Yeast Infection – If your baby has recently had a yeast infection or a UTI, it is ideal to disinfect cloth diapers before using them again.
  3. Molds – A lot of times you may experience black spots on your diapers and soakers. These are called as molds. They occur if the diaper is left damp/wet or unwashed for longer hours. In such cases, you may want to bleach cloth diapers.

Which Bleach can I use?

Liquid (buy link) (Non-scented ones) to bleach. If it is difficult to source Clorox, you may use Rin Ala.

HOW TO BLEACH CLOTH DIAPERS?

how to bleach cloth diapers

Step 1 :

Wash your Diapers using the normal wash routine. Do note- you should only bleach after the diapers are washed thoroughly. NEVER

put dirty diapers directly for bleach

Step 2 :

Take cold water in a bucket. Add 5 Ml of Clorox bleach for EACH Litre of water. (If you are using Rin Ala, follow the quantity mentioned in the bottle).

Dilute the bleach in the water well by stirring using a spatula or a mug.

Please be careful using hands since bleach will irritate the skin.

Step 3 :

Add diapers one by one.

Separate the diapers and snappable insert to be sunk completely in the water.

Keep it for a minimum of 30 minutes and not more than 45 minutes. No need to add the diaper shells unless the baby has had yeast or if the shells have molds

Step 4 :

Take out the Diapers and rinse in hot water once before putting them in the machine.

Step 5 :

Add the Diapers in the machine, run a 30 minutes hot wash (40-degree minimum and not beyond 60 degrees) once without detergent and again once with detergent.

Step 5 :

Make sure the bleach is completely washed out. Smell the diapers- If you feel it has bleach smell -do a hot wash once more with/ without little detergent till the smell is gone.

Step 6:

Line dry for drying, ideally in sun

NOTE:

If you have hard water please add a water softener in all the washes

Please, PM us or Whatsapp us to know the amount of  water softener to be used.

Additional Tip : Do not bleach the diapers in hard water. Chlorine can react with the iron that has dissolved in your hard water and cause stains (source).

How to wash cloth diapers?

Washing cloth diapers might seem challenging at first but is the same as washing regular clothes. Watch the video above for 4 easy steps to wash your Superbottoms cloth diapers.

Every individual is different and may follow various steps to wash cloth diapers.

Here is a simple guide to wash them:

Storage – The first step to washing cloth diapers is how does one store them before wash? Do we soak them till washing? Do we wash every day? – Well, the answers are very simple. If the diaper is pooped on, you can knock off the poop using a health faucet or under a running tap. You may store it in a dry bucket (Pail) or in a wet bag before you wash them. Washing them every day or at least every alternate day is ideal. Do not keep them soaked in water until the time of washing.

1)      Pre-wash – A pre-wash is nothing but rinsing a diaper off all the pee to make it ready for the main wash. If you are washing them in the machine, you may run a quick 30 or rinse+Spin cycle with one teaspoon of detergent. The duration of this cycle should be 20-30 minutes.

If you are Handwashing – Simply rinse the diaper under running water thoroughly and agitate it well till the pee is rinsed off. You may use a plunger too to do this.

2)      Main Wash – The main wash is the cycle where the diapers are actually getting cleaned. You can toss your other laundry load in this so as to save water and electricity. If you are washing them in the machine, you can run any of the daily wash cycles like Cotton/Cotton Eco/Daily Wash/Fuzzy Wash/Mixed etc. The entire duration of this cycle should be 45-60 minutes at least.

If you are hand washing them, you can soak it for 30-40 minutes in detergent water and rub and agitate it well so that the diapers get cleaned well. You can also use a plunger for easy agitation.

3)      Drying – You can spin dry the diapers or tumble dry at the lowest heat and then line dry them. You can also sun dry them. However, do not sun dry the outer covers for more than 1-2 hours as it may damage the elastics.

WASHING YOUR NEW SUPERBOTTOMS?

Simple guide here:

Additional Tips –

1)      DO NOT use a brush as it can damage the fabric.

2)     DO NOT  use a fabric softener/Dettol/Ezee/genteel/Patanjali/Rin or any detergents with fragrances and softeners.

3)      DO NOT use liquid detergents because that can affect the absorbency of the diapers.

4)      Give them hot water rinses once or twice a month. It helps in preventing any built up issues. To do so – Rinse washed soakers in hot water (60 degrees) till there are no soap suds seen in the water.

Ideal to do this in a washing machine since it gives the necessary agitation.

If handwashing, then take the hot water such that the temperature is bearable for you. After regular wash, soak the diapers in hot water for not more than 5 mins, agitate them and rinse thoroughly. Repeat a couple of times. Spin dry if possible. Using a plunger for handwash is recommended.

5)      Use 5ml of water softener for prewash and 10ml in the main wash in addition to the detergent if you have hard water. Hard water affects the absorbency of the diapers due to the mineral content in them.

6)      You may bleach the diapers once a year if it gives stink/Absorbency issues. You can check the steps here- (Link to bleach)

7)      Use fleece liner to make cleaning easier!

A-Z Myths on Cloth Diapering – Busted

A mother is judged for every single choice that she makes for her baby. People will judge you, whether you breastfeed or formula feed the baby, whether the baby is chubby or lean, fair or dark, whether you use coconut oil or olive oil, whether you start solids early or late, and similarly, whether you choose to use Cloth diapers or Disposable diapers. This list is never ending. I am sure most of the mothers will agree with me here.
