A full-term pregnancy, we all know, lasts for about 9 months, ranging from 37 to 42 weeks but you must be wondering what trimesters in pregnancy are.

Based on the fetus's developmental milestones, your pregnancy can be divided into 3 individual stages, usually known as trimesters of pregnancy - first, second and third. The fetus undergoes many developmental milestones during these trimesters of pregnancy, some of which we will be talking about here.

Pregnancy anxiety often arises from the unknown. The more you know about the hormonal and biological changes your body will be going through during pregnancy, the better prepared you will be emotionally to face the challenges ahead. You can maintain a pregnancy trimester chart to keep track of the progression of your pregnancy.

The first trimester of pregnancy is from week 1 to week 12. Many women consider the last day of their menstrual cycle to be the beginning of their pregnancy. While a missed period can be the first tell-tale sign of pregnancy, you’ll have to take a test to be sure. You can either do a home pregnancy test or your doctor can confirm it for you.

THE FIRST TRIMESTER: FOR THE FETUS

Now that you’re pregnant, congratulations! You’re heading into a period of rapid physiological changes and you’ll spend the coming months wondering what your baby looks like and how it is developing.

The fallopian tube is where the sperm and egg unite during conception to form your baby’s first cell, the zygote. This zygote will then travel down to your uterus and implant itself there to form a growing embryo. That’s when you become pregnant.

The inner cluster of rapidly multiplying cells will become the embryo, and the outer layer will become the placenta - to nourish your fetus throughout the pregnancy.
