How To Wash Cloth Diapers for The First Time

Any apparel or clothing item you purchase for the first time, including cloth diapers, should be adequately cleaned & washed before use. Here are some tips to help you wash & prepare your washable diapers for their first use.

• New cloth diapers usually do not need to be prepared in any particular way before being used.
• To get rid of any dirt or residue that may have accumulated during shipment, it is advised to wash newborn cloth diapers at least once before using them.
• To ensure the diapers are clean and ready for use, wash them with your usual laundry using a detergent designed specifically for cloth diapers.
• Liquid detergents, fabric softeners, and antiseptics should not be used on cloth diapers since they can harm the fabric and shorten its lifespan.

Prepping Before Use – How to Clean Cloth Diapers Before Wash

Once you start using cloth diapers regularly, you must understand how to clean cloth diapers after every use. You cannot toss a soiled diaper with pee or poop in it directly into a washing pile or washing machine. Thus, the following is needed before you wash them.

UNO Cloth Diapers by Alia

It is simple to get the diaper ready for washing. After removing the diaper from the baby's bum, it is best to remove any left poop residue by rinsing the diaper once. If washing by machine, one can run a short cycle, rinse, or spin cycle for the first wash. It is advisable first to wash or pre-wash the diapers and then line-dry them once every two to three days.

Some parents prefer Easy Clean Top Sheets to make cleaning easy without messing with the diaper. Once diapers are off the baby's bum, parents can place them in a slightly covered bucket or a waterproof cloth bag.

How To Wash Cloth Diapers – The Ideal Routine

1. Handwashing Your Cloth Diapers

STEP 1: Soak the UNO and UNO extras for 30 minutes in detergent water.
STEP 2: Wash well by rubbing properly. Do not brush the cloth diapers, as doing this might damage them.
STEP 3: Rinse thoroughly till the water runs clear and no detergent remains in the diapers.
STEP 4: Line dry under the sun.

2. Machine Washing Your Cloth Diapers

STEP 1: Put the dirty diaper in the machine with one detergent sheet and run a short cycle to clean it.
STEP 2: If you want to, add your other clothes to the machine and run your longer regular wash cycle. Add regular detergent or 2 sheets for a full machine load with your other laundry.
STEP 3: Dry in the machine.

How To Dry Cloth Diapers

When drying cloth diapers, you can hang them outside in the sun for a natural and effective way to dry and sanitize them. Use a drying rack or clothesline near a window for good air circulation if you are indoors. Remember to avoid high heat settings if using a dryer to prevent damage to the fabric. Just ensure they are completely dry before using them again for your little one, as moisture in cloth diapers can lead to infection or rashes for your baby.

Ideal Frequency for Washing Cloth Diapers

Generally, a dirty diaper can be stored for two to three days without leaving stains or odour. Many parents would rather have a wash cycle daily or every other day. Little children soil their clothes when eating and throwing up; thus, doing laundry more frequently than usual is necessary. Changing clothes two or three times a day is also a good hygienic practice.

Generally speaking, even if your baby has not pooped during the day, change their diaper once every two to three hours. If you combine them with your usual laundry pile, you should have a full load of clothing in two to three days. If not more frequently, this is the recommended washing schedule for cloth diapers.

Key Takeaways

1. Preparing Before Use – Diapers might have manufacturing or storage facility residue buildup; washing the cloth diapers before you start using them is a good practice.
2. Washing Instructions – Whether you wash the diapers by hand or in a machine, use a mild detergent and follow the washing instructions given by the brand for the prolonged life of your precious diapers.
3. Drying Cloth Diapers – The best practice is to dry your washable diapers in sunlight to eliminate all bacteria. But, if it is a cloudy or rainy day, you can dry them near the window indoors and ensure they are completely dry before using them.

FAQs

Q1 – How can I dry my cloth diapers when no sun comes out in the monsoon season?

Ans - When the sun's hiding during the monsoon, try drying your baby's cloth diapers indoors near a window or with a fan for air circulation. You can also use a dehumidifier or dryer on low heat to speed up the drying process and keep those diapers fresh and ready for your little one!

Q2 – Can I use antiseptic liquid to clean my baby's cloth diapers after washing?

Ans - It is not a good idea to use antiseptic liquid on your baby's cloth diapers after washing. Those chemicals could be harsh on your baby's delicate skin, especially in the diaper area. Stick to using gentle detergents made for washing cloth diapers to keep your little one's skin happy and healthy!

Q3 – How do I remove yellow stains from my baby's washable diapers?

Ans - To remove yellow stains from your baby's washable diapers, try hanging them in the sun—it works like magic! If the stains persist, you can also try using lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda, oxygen-based bleach, or hydrogen peroxide to help get those diapers looking fresh and clean again.

Hey Gayathribala,

We would love to help you.

Pee stains seen on the pad is mostly due to pee build-up which can be taken care of by following the right wash routine. You can also add a bit more detergent while doing pre-wash and main wash.

Please follow the wash routine as shared below.
https://www.superbottoms.com/pages/how-to-wash

Please also follow the hot water rinses by using hot water enough for your hands to handle. Soaking the washed diapers for 5 minutes in hot water followed by hand agitation and rinsing them until all soap suds are left and water runs clear.

Hi,

Due to poop, the diaper is becoming yellow. As you said, do not use the brush. Yellow stains are thereafter removing the Poop from the diapers.
Can you suggest, how to remove them without using laundry sheets?
