How your cloth diapering experience will be depends a lot on getting the fit right.
Wearing cloth diapers is quite simple, however, a few tips can ensure the perfect fit your baby and thus a brilliant performance by the cloth diapers.
So here are a few tips on how to wear a cloth diaper on your baby –
Size: There are 4 size options in Superbottoms regular size diapers and 3 size options in the newborn diapers. You can watch on how to size the cloth diapers in this video here.
Size the cloth diaper ideally before you put in on your baby. That ways, it is easy to place the soaker in the diaper.
You may have to try 1-2 sizes before finding the ideal size.
The size should be such that there should be no gap between thigh and elastic. This may cause leaking of the cloth diaper. At the same time, it should not be so tight that it would leave deep red marks on the leg.
Do note that light, socks like elastic marks are perfectly okay.
Elastic placement: Placing the elastic post wearing in the leg crease helps in getting the most comfortable fit.
When a diaper is worn, just pull the thigh elastics in the leg joint region as shown in picture below.
Waist snap closure: Closing snaps around the waist should follow the same rule – No gap around back. However, a 1 finger gap in front of tummy is completely okay.
If putting on the diaper on your active baby seems like a challenge, you can use our snaps to velcro convertors. Velcro make it very easy to get the right fit especially around waists especially when the kid is in day-care or in grandparents care, or just when he / she decides to be naughty and super active.
Advanced or Modern Cloth Diapers are sophisticated diapering system made entirely of cloth. Cloth Diapers in India are fast growing trend with the conscientious new parents.
As a new parent, when you make a choice of diaper, some of the key factors are –
- Baby’s comfort: This of course is a key factor to consider and baby’s comfort depends on how the diaper feels against his skin and is it keeping his skin happy!
Cloth Diapers being ‘Cloth’ are definitely super soft on baby’s skin and also contain none of the nasty chemicals that disposables do.
Moreover, cloth diapers are breathable! Yes the outer in cloth diapers can let air pass through but not water, making them much more breathable (and brilliant)
- Pocket’s comfort: This one is fairly obvious. Each disposable diaper costs Rs 11 onwards and the cost only increases with the size.
With Reusable Cloth Diapers, you save atleast 74% of your money (or more!) even if you go for good quality cloth diapers and not the cheap diapers.
- Earth Loving: Both in terms of the number ofwashable diapers used and also in terms of the duration it takes for the diaper to vanish off the face of the earth, cloth diapers score over disposable diapers, ANY DAY!
- Leak Proof: You know disposable diapers are leak proof. Did you know cloth diapers are completely leak proof too? And in fact, for those awful poopsplosions (yuck!) cloth diapers are known to fare far far better
- Long hours absorbency:Cloth diapers absorb for hours together, even overnight!
- Dry-feel: With a unique stay-dry fabric in cloth diapers, they are just as good in keeping your baby’s bum dry.
So if you get all the benefits of disposable diapers in cloth, why would you want plastic touching your baby’s bottom?
If you have a baby, you are definitely aware that anything can affect your baby’s pee pattern. A season, an illness, certain medications or sometimes, there could simply be no particular reason!
Winter however is a time when you can expect some obvious changes in your baby’s pee pattern. Cloth diapering in India during winters can depend on where do you stay. In areas such as Mumbai, Chennai the winters are pretty mild however, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune and such places can definitely be much colder.
Here are 3 ways to cloth diaper during winters –
- Get heavy absorbency diapers: Winters can have your babies peeing often. The cold temperatures do have that effect. It is a good idea to invest in heavy absorbency diapers during winters. This, especially if you live in a place where the winters are really cold.
- Use coconut oil: Winters can cause dry-skin. Add to it the reduced diaper-free time and it can cause irritation to the skin. It is a good idea to give the bum some diaper free time, if possible. Use coconut oil on the baby’s bum liberally between changes. This will keep your baby’s skin hydrated.
- Sunning and washing: During winters, especially in very cold areas, drying may take longer. It is a good idea to find atleast some sun time and get your diapers out there. Also, do spin dry in washing machines to help dry quicker.
Let the winter season not deter you from cloth diapering your child. It is really pretty simple and doable if you just tweak your diapering routines and follow these simple baby diapering tips.
Do cloth diapers stink?
It is one of the most common questions that we get from parents who are not sure about reusable diapers.
Is it hygienic?
Will it not stink?
It is great that they are washable diapers, but will they come completely clean?
Well, here’s the answer – Cloth nappies do not stink UNLESS there is some reason.
What could the reason be?
Reason 1: Detergent buildup
Reason 2: The baby cloth diapers are not getting cleaned enough
Detergent buildup – This usually happens with the detergent particles that are built up in your diaper react with the urine.
This causes a strong Ammonia smell, especially in diapers that are used overnight.
The diapers are not getting cleaned enough – This happens in rare cases when the cloth diapers are just not getting enough detergent to get completely clean.
If the water at your place is hard water, that could also be a reason.
How to deal with the stink?
The first way is of course to prevent it. A few tips to prevent any stink are-
- Use enough detergent to wash the diapers – not more, not less. Ideally, we recommend that you use a little less detergent that you would use for the same size load of regular garments.
The thumb rule is that, if there are too many suds (soap bubbles) while rinsing and if it is taking too many rinses to get rid of them, you might be using too much detergent.
If the diapers seem to be stinking even when just washed, it might be too less.
- Running a hot wash cycle once a month for the soakers (not outers) also helps maintain them
- If you get good sunlight in your area, then you can sun the diapers and soakers too once in a while
- Once a month, washing the cloth diapers in very diluted bleach can also help
- Quickly rinsing the diapers after removal can also help reduce the buildup. Do not soak the diapers. Only rinse and keep them till washing.
If you already have stinking cloth diapers, here’s what you can do.
- First step, check if you have hard water.
Hard water reduces the effectiveness of the detergent and also causes mineral buildup in the diapers.
This can be the cause of your diaper stink.
Solution: Use a water softener to wash your diapers. Run a few hot washes (ideally till you see no suds in the water)
If this doesn’t work, try stripping the diapers using RLR (available on Amazon)
- If you do not get hard water, then the problem could typically be either detergent buildup or less cleaning.
- Do your diapers smell clean just after the wash? They should smell like clean clothes do. If yes, then the reason why they stink on peeing could be due to the detergent buildup.
Solution1 :Run a few hot wash cycles on your diapers.
Rinse clean diaper inserts in hot water (not too hot – just enough for you to be able to dip your hand in comfortably)
Do not use any detergent while rinsing the diapers in hot water.
Run the hot washes till there are no suds in the water while rinsing.
Solution 2: If this does not work, then do a bleach rinse
Soak clean diapers in bleach solution (5 ml / 5 ltr) for 15-20 minutes.
Rinse off the bleach completely, preferably in hot water
Use regular liquid bleach for this purpose.
If the diapers are not smelling clean just after wash, then you may simply need to increase the amount of detergent you are using since your diapers are not getting clean enough.
You can include your pocket diapers in the bleach rinse to remove any elements such as creams clinging onto it. Cover diapers do not need the bleach rinse since there is no chance of any detergent build up in them.

Many parents believe that reusable diapers are to be used primarily at home. They use them at home during day-time while for nights and for going out; they prefer to use disposables because they are, as the name suggests, easy disposing off. However, cloth diapering out of home is much simpler than you think.
Here are 4 ways to make cloth diapering out of home a success for you.
1. Decide how long do you plan to be out and figure a few things out
Depending on the time duration for which you plan to be out, you will have decide on the type of diaper you choose.
If you are going to be out for long, at a place where there may not be proper changing facilities, you may want to use high-absorbency diapers such as Superbottoms Plus All-in-ones.
If you are sure there are changing rooms available, you can use regular diapers too.
Using covers with cloth diaper soakers/inserts are good for out of home diapering if you have changing facilities.
You can carry extra cloth diaper inserts and a few covers and simply change soakers and reuse the outer. That way, you have to carry lesser number of diapers
2. Carry a wet bag
Wet bags are waterproof bags that are especially convenient to carry wet / soiled diapers post changing.
Carrying wet bags makes like very simple when you are cloth diapering out of home.
3. What do I do with the poop?
This is one of the biggest concerns parents have when they cloth diaper out of home. So when your baby poops, like with disposable diapers, you need to wipe your baby’s bottom clean first.
If you have the facility to, knock off the poop in the pot and flush it down. You can keep the diaper in the wet bag / waterproof bag to carry home. Ensure that the bag is tightly sealed and closed to avoid stink.
If you do not have the option of knocking off the poop, it is okay to tightly close the diaper and store it in a waterproof bag, sealed shut.
Once you are home, you can wash the diapers clean as usual.
4. Cloth Diapering on Vacation
While this calls for an entirely separate post (that we will put up eventually), cloth diapering on vacation requires a bit of planning but it is certainly doable!
As we always say, figure out the washing and storing facilities. If you are on a homestay vacation, choose one with a washing machine. If not, hotel bath tubs / wash basins work just fine.
Ensure you carry enough cloth diapers and your favourite detergent and you are good to go!
Cloth diapering 100% is doable and great for your baby and the environment.
When you can get the convenience of disposable diapers in the goodness of cloth, why let plastic touch your baby’s bottom?
When you have a baby, you have to make many choices about every small thing. In this blog, we will try making one choice easier for you. Choosing the right reusable diaper (Advanced cloth diaper) for your baby.
Some factors you want to figure out before you choose the cloth diaper
- How much of cloth diapering do you intend to do
Some parents prefer to use diapers only during the night-time or nap-time while others prefer to keep them all through the day. Depending on your intention, you will need to figure how many diapers you will need. That will also define the type you want to go for.
- Age of your baby
Advanced Cloth Diapers come in 2 main sizes –
One-size: These diapers fit babies from 3-17 kg. They have snaps to adjust size as per your baby’s requirement
For newborn babies, 1-2 month, the one-size diapers may seem a little big. For them, we suggest choosing the newborn size.
Newborn size: These are small size diapers that last the baby till up to 7kg. They are great if you want to cloth diaper your newborn. Newborn diapers also come with size adjustment snaps. You can read more about the newborn diapers here
One of the key benefits of cloth diapering is that it saves you a lot of money. If one chooses to use disposable diapers, you end up spending anywhere around 70-80 thousand rupees. Cloth diapering, on the other hand, can be managed in 10-12 thousand rupees or lesser!
If you want to go even more economical on cloth diapers too, you can choose cover diapers instead of pocket diapers and you can indeed manage your diapering in as less as 5-6 thousand rupees.
- Heavy / medium wetter
Your cloth diapering choice also depends on how heavy wetting your baby is. If your baby is a very heavy wetter, you may want to choose soakers / inserts that are ideal for heavy-wetting babies. Hemp soakers are known to be the most absorbent soakers and you can choose those for your little one if he is a heavy wetter.
You can also choose diapers such as Superbottoms Plus which are ideal for heavy wetters and are known to last good 7-8 hours as well.
Using cloth diapers is easy. However, if you are planning to leave your child in the care of grandparents, nannies, or day-care, you may want to choose diapers that are simplest to use.
With that objective, going for a pocket diaper or Superbottoms Plus All-in-one cloth diapers is ideal. In the pocket diaper, you can stuff the pocket with soakers / inserts once a day post washing and you are good to go.
Making cloth diapers work for you needs the right advice on the choice of diapers. Cloth diapers can be a very cost-effective, however, a wrong choice can discourage you or can turn out to be expensive in the longer run. Diapering is an important aspect of childcare and development. With at least 2 years of your child being spent in diapers, you will want the choice to be right.

When a new baby is born, her / his body is introduced to the natural surrounding. Out from the protective environment of a mother’s womb, it takes time for baby’s skin to become adjusted to the regular environment. During this time, the skin is extremely delicate and needs a lot of care. When it comes to diapering, the challenge is compounded by the even more sensitive skin in the bum area. The fecal matter also changes skin pH making it prone to rashes and irritation. Diapering a newborn can be therefore tricky.
While traditionally mothers have always trusted only the softest clothes for the purpose in the form of langots or nappy squares, these days diapers are increasingly chosen for their convenience.
We, of course, believe that advanced cloth diapers are a great option for newborn babies because they provide all the convenience of disposable diapers in the goodness of cloth!
Here is a list of 5 reasons why Superbottoms newborn cover diapers are a great diapering choice for new babies –
1. Versatile: Put them on anything!
Cover diapers are extremely versatile. They can be put on soakers / langots / home made pads / pre-folds to impart waterproofing and to contain the mess within.
2. Economical: Save money with covers
New babies poop and pee often, most times without any routine or notice.
Superbottoms cover diaper comes with 2 dry-feel soakers.
So when one soaker is completely soaked / soiled, you can simply remove the soaker and replace with a fresh one if the cover is not soiled.
Thus a few covers and a set of soakers and you are good to go!
Moreover, babies outgrow the newborn diapers in a few months. It is; therefore, wise to keep investment in them minimum. From that point of view, covers make the ideal newborn diapering option.
3. Dry Feel: Dryer bum, lesser rashes!
The soakers that come with Superbottoms newborn covers have a unique fabric layer that imparts the baby’s bum with dry-feel.
This special layer stays in contact with the baby’s bum and passes the urine to the layers below while keeping itself completely dry!
Dryer bum, lesser rashes!
4. Double leak-guards: Keep the runny poops within
We at Superbottoms understand that newborn breastfed poo is runny. Poop blowouts are only too well-known and of course super messy. With double leak-guards, Superbottoms newborn cover diapers provide double protection from poop blowouts containing the messes within
5. Adjustable: Great fit for a super comfort

What exactly is the difference between a Pocket Diaper and a Cover Diaper? And what is best for my baby?
This is one of the most common questions we come across. Here is a simple, pictorial explanation that you may find useful.
So Pocket Diapers have a Pocket, hence they are called ‘Pocket Diapers’ and Cover diapers only cover the soaker hence they are called ‘Cover Diapers’
So what is best for your baby?
To know what is best for your baby, you must understand the pros and cons of each.
- Cover Diapers, since you can replace the wet soaker and reuse the cover, are a little more economical
- Pocket Diapers, due to overall dry-feel fabric, provide better performance and protection
Pocket diapers need to be washed completely once the soaker is soaked. This because, although the dry-feel layer is dry, urine has passed through it and for hygiene reasons it is best to replace the entire diaper.
If you are new to Cloth Diapering, we always recommend starting out with Pocket Diapers. They are simple, great in performance, and will give you a good idea about cloth diapering.
This is how they look on the inside.
When is it best to go for Cover Diapers?
Go for cover diapers if you are looking for a more economical option or if you want something to go over your nappy pads, homemade nappies, or even padded langots. Cover diapers are thus more versatile than pocket diapers.
Many mothers also keep a mixed set of Cover Diapers and Pocket Diapers – Covers for day-time or use at home, and Pockets during nights or on-the-go.
However, if you are trying Cloth Diapers for the first time, it is best to start with the most common and popular type, the Pocket Diaper.
